Building My Ultimate Home IT Rack

Building My Ultimate Home IT Rack

Introduction For years, my home network was housed in an IKEA Besta cabinet—a budget-friendly solution that worked but had its limitations. The components sat loosely inside, with cables running everywhere, and the network was managed by an unmanaged switch and a FritzBox modem/router. It was functional but far from optimal. You can read about the journey of creating the cabinet to upgrading it in the two linked blog articles I wrote here and here. This year, I finally took the leap and upgraded to a proper wall-mounted 19” 15U rack, fulfilling a long-time dream. This new setup improves manageability, reliability,…
The Future of Energy: Why Renewables Outperform Nuclear Power

The Future of Energy: Why Renewables Outperform Nuclear Power

As the world transitions toward sustainable energy, the debate between nuclear power and renewables intensifies. While nuclear has long been seen as a stable energy source, the financial reality tells a different story. Massive costs, long construction times, and rigid infrastructure make nuclear power a poor investment compared to the rapidly advancing wind and solar industries. Hinkley Point C, the UK’s newest nuclear project, will cost up to €300 billion over 60 years when including operational, fuel, and waste disposal costs. In contrast, a fully renewable alternative using 10 GW of offshore wind, 10 GW of solar, and 100 GWh of battery storage could provide the same energy for just €60 billion—a fraction of nuclear’s cost. Nuclear power is also not a growing trend. The number of newly built reactors barely keeps up with decommissioned ones. Even France, one of the most nuclear-reliant nations, now considers it a financial disaster due to rising maintenance costs and outdated infrastructure. Renewables are flexible, scalable, and decentralized—offering a future-proof energy solution. With advancements in storage, electric vehicles, and smart grids, the transition to renewables is not only feasible but the most cost-effective choice for the future.
Maintaining a Healthy Home Office: The Importance of Monitoring CO2 Levels in Home Office

Maintaining a Healthy Home Office: The Importance of Monitoring CO2 Levels in Home Office

In the age of remote work, many of us have transformed our homes into fully functioning offices. This shift has brought numerous benefits, including flexibility and a better work-life balance. However, it also introduces a unique set of challenges, particularly when it comes to maintaining a healthy indoor environment. One critical aspect that often goes overlooked is the quality of the air we breathe while we work. Among various indoor air pollutants, carbon dioxide (CO2) is a significant concern, especially in enclosed spaces like a home office. Monitoring CO2 levels is not just about maintaining comfort—it's a matter of health…

Unveiling the Unspoken: 5 Truths about Electric Vehicles No one talks about

In the ever-evolving landscape of automotive technology and the increase of focus on decarbonization, the spotlight often shines on the well-known benefits of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) – environmental sustainability and carbon dioxide emissions. In my previous blog posts (here and here) I already debunked some myths around BEVs and described my own personal experiences buying a Tesla. Daniel Holzinger is a very well-known personality in the Austrian but also German digital work community. He is managing director of his…
Home Automation Part 2: HMIP Glass and Window Sensor

Home Automation Part 2: HMIP Glass and Window Sensor

As mentioned in my previous post, I am working on home automation (mainly) with HomeMatic IP (HMIP). Well, and one gap I could find in their quite extensive range of different sensors was, that they did not have a glass breakage sensor - only window/door opening sensors. But because I wanted to secure all windows in our basement with both methods, I had to get creative. After a little research I ended up with these components: HomeMatic IP Kontakt-Schnittstelle 153149A0 HmIP-SCI (HMIM contact interface) costing about 30€ a piece.Abus Draht-NC-Öffnungsmelder FU7350W (Abus wire normally closed opening sensor) about 8€ a…
