Nerdy Wedding, Part 1: The Wedding Website

Every geek or nerd who gets married wonders how to weave their passions, hobbies, or quirks into the wedding in a useful way. One idea that has become quite common by now is to create a wedding website. In our case, this was especially helpful since we weren’t getting married in Germany and needed to provide travel instructions, hotel recommendations, and other useful information for our guests. This article shares my thoughts and experiences, so you can hopefully save yourself some trial and error. CMS and Design For the CMS, I used WordPress, as I do for all my sites. It’s easy…

Beer Meets Esotericism

I came across this clever and funny observation from German physicist and cabaret artist Vince Ebert, who often explains science with humor and simple everyday examples. “If I suspect, for example, ‘There might be beer in the fridge,’ and I go check, then I’m basically already practicing an early form of science.Big difference compared to theology: there, assumptions usually aren’t tested. So if I just claim, ‘There’s beer in the fridge,’ I’m a theologian. If I actually look, I’m a scientist. And if I look, find nothing, and still insist there’s beer inside—then I’m an esoteric!” — Vince Ebert

Quotes surrounding Ayrton Senna

As you probably know by now, I’m an Ayrton Senna fan. The other day, I came across a poll on Facebook asking fans to choose between Schumacher and Senna as the greatest driver of all time. For me, the answer is crystal clear: Senna. Thousands of voters agreed, though of course there were still some doubters in the comments. For me, it’s undeniable: Senna was the greatest of all time because of his talent, his charisma, his uncompromising will to win, and the aura he carried both on and off the track. As Jeremy Clarkson once said—though he personally believed Gilles Villeneuve…

Good news for TV Nerds…

This week has been—and will be—a good one for TV nerds. First, the good news for fans of science, chaos, and reckless experimentation: you probably know the German TV show “Nicht Nachmachen” (“Do Not Imitate”) on ZDF. In it, comedians Bernhard Hoëcker and Wigald Boning try out all the things you should never, ever, ever, ever do. From balloons filled with propane to heating bottles of red wine in a microwave, the show is pure madness, mixed with the infectious fun of Wigald and Bernhard. The first six episodes aired in 2012, and in 2013 a second season was confirmed. Bernhard Hoëcker wrote on Facebook: “Finally it’s happening: Nicht…

Historic Motorsport Moments

As you know, I’m a huge motorsport fan. I mainly follow Formula 1, the DTM, and the ADAC GT Masters. But of course, I’m also fascinated by other series like WTCC, the World Rally Championship (WRC), and legendary endurance races like the 24 Hours of Le Mans or the Nürburgring 24 Hours. As fans, we often look back—sometimes with goosebumps, sometimes with horror—at unforgettable moments in racing history. Here are a few that have stuck with me. (And apologies: all of these are from the last 20–30 years. I’m not that old—thankfully!—and naturally, we’re most deeply connected to moments we’ve lived through ourselves or to drivers and tracks…

CRE on IPv6

If you’ve never really understood what IPv6 is all about—or maybe haven’t even heard of it—there’s a fantastic deep dive in Tim Pritlove’s CRE podcast. In just under four hours, it unpacks the background, the technology, and why it matters for the future of the internet. The growth of the internet hasn’t slowed down since its early days, and the original estimates of how far it would reach are long outdated. The pool of IPv4 addresses is effectively exhausted, and the spotlight has shifted to the successor: IPv6—the standard designed to keep the internet scalable and future-proof. Why the iPhone 5 Will Be a Success

As some of you know, I’m a bit of an Apple fan. But don’t worry—this isn’t going to be a sales pitch for the latest gadget from Cupertino. I simply want to share why I still believe the iPhone is the best smartphone on the market—and how the iPhone 5 only reinforces that view. A Big Step Forward Last week, Apple officially introduced the long-awaited iPhone 5. Unlike past launches, many details had leaked ahead of time—whether intentionally or not. And yes, as a longtime Apple follower, I couldn’t help but think, “This never would’ve happened under Steve.” That said,…

Is Warp Drive Actually Possible? Even NASA Is Taking a Closer Look

What if faster-than-light travel wasn’t just a sci-fi fantasy? In Star Trek, starships like the Enterprise cruise through the galaxy at "warp speed"—a term that became iconic for faster-than-light travel. This is made possible by a fictional technology called the warp drive, which bends or "warps" space-time itself, allowing a ship to move vast distances in the blink of an eye without violating the universal speed limit set by Einstein’s theory of relativity. Instead of pushing a ship through space, the warp drive moves space around the ship. In theory, the space in front of the ship is contracted while…
